Modems / Phone Lines: Troubleshooting
Windows NT Modem Installation. Printable View Return to List
Basic Windows NT Modem troubleshooting:
  1. Verify your modem properties.
  2. Try disabling FIFO from the Ports icon in Control Panel. Once in Ports highlight your modem port and choose Settings. Click the Advanced option and uncheck FIFO Enabled. Click OK (you will be asked to reboot). You can also try lowering your modem speed in Dial-Up Networking (it is in Configure under Edit entry).
  3. Call your modem maker and verify your modem is not software error correcting (it should be hardware error correcting). If it is hardware error correcting verify you have the latest Firmware (this updates your error correction protocols). Obtain the Modem help guide for more information.
  4. If your modem is external verify you are using a 16550 UART chip.
Advanced Windows NT Modem troubleshooting:

Verify you have the latest modem drivers from your modem manufacturer and follow their directions to install it. (You should remove the current modem, and add the new modem drivers).
