Palm Dialer Error Messages Printable View Return to List
Alerts

Alerts display messages to the user via a modal popup form which requires an acknowledgement from the user. They can be classified as either Errors, Warnings, or Informational. In general, alerts with names ending in Error are Errors, alerts with names ending in Warning are Warnings, and alerts with names ending in Help or Status are Informative. Different icons are displayed depending on the alert classification.

Error Messages

Error messages are displayed through alerts. Alerts display messages through a popup form which requires an acknowledgement from the user. Depending on which custom alert form is used to display the error message, additional information (error codes) may also be displayed in conjuction with specific error messages. Below are lists of the most common types of error messages, grouped by type: FTP, Network, Update, and Version.

FTP

FTP error messages may occur at various points during the file download processes for Update Dialer... or Update Phone List...

  • Ftp Closed Error (i.e. ´Connection closed´)
  • Ftp Socket Error (i.e. ´Socket read error´)
  • Ftp Reply Error (i.e. ´Reply timeout´)
  • Ftp Create Error (i.e. ´Error creating data connection´)
  • Ftp Format Error (i.e. ´Invalid database format´)
  • Ftp Get Error (i.e. ´File Transfer Protocol get error´)
  • Ftp General Error (i.e. ´Download error´)
  • Ftp Server Error (i.e. ´Unable to contact FTP server´)
  • Ftp File Error (i.e. ´Unable to find file on server´)
  • Ftp Memory Error (i.e. ´Insufficient memory to allocate required file transfer resources´)
  • Ftp Internal Error (i.e. ´Internal FTP Error´)

Due to the nature of dial connections, the IP network itself, and of FTP servers in general, most of these errors can be expected to occur from time to time. In general, the solution is to try the operation again, possibly after disconnecting and reconnecting, or after an appropriate delay.

Network

Network error messages may occur at various points in the dialer startup or network connection sequence. The network connection sequence may be initiated by the user clicking the Connect button, or by the user requesting either an Update Dialer... or Update Phone List... file download operation from the appropriate menu.

  • Net Available Error (i.e. ´The network library is not available on this device´)
  • Net Obscure 1 Error (i.e. ´A type 1 network error has occurred´)
  • Net Obscure 2 Error (i.e. ´A type 2 network error has occurred´)
  • Net Memory Error (i.e. ´Insufficient memory to allocate required network resources´)
  • Net Setup Error (i.e. ´Required network setup not found´)
  • Net PPP Error (i.e. ´Required network PPP interface not found´)

The Net Available Error indicates that the Palm device does not include the Network Library, and hence does not support networking at all. The Net PPP Error indicates that the Network Library does not support PPP connections, which are required by the dialer. These errors should never occur in normal situations.

Update

Update error messages may occur at various points during an Update Phone List... file download operation.

  • Update Version Error (i.e. ´The downloaded phone list file has an incompatible version number. You should probably update this dialer´)
  • Update Header Error (i.e. ´The downloaded phone list file has a bad header´)
  • Update Read Error (i.e. ´Unable to read the downloaded phone list file´)
  • Update Open Error (i.e. ´Unable to open the downloaded phone list file´)
  • Update Delete 1 Error (i.e. ´Unable to delete the current phone list file´)
  • Update Delete 2 Error (i.e. ´Unable to delete the downloaded phone list file´)
  • Update Find 1 Error (i.e. ´Unable to find the downloaded phone list file´)
  • Update Find 2 Error (i.e. ´Unable to find the current phone list file´)
  • Update Set Info Error (i.e. ´Unable to set the phone list information´)

These messages may indicate problems in the dialer configuration, problems with the dial connection or network (DNS failure), problems with the FTP server, or a missing/misplaced/incorrect/corrupted phone list file on the FTP server.

Version

Version error messages may occur at various points during an Update Dialer... file download operation.

  • Version Set Info 1 Error (i.e. ´Unable to set the current dialer application information´)
  • Version Set Info 2 Error (i.e. ´Unable to set the new dialer application information´)
  • Version Find 1 Error (i.e. ´Unable to find the current dialer application file´)
  • Version Find 2 Error (i.e. ´Unable to find the new dialer application file´)
  • Version Cleanup 1 Error (i.e. ´Unable to read type information for the old dialer application´)
  • Version Cleanup 2 Error (i.e. ´Unable to change type information for the old dialer application´)
  • Version Cleanup 3 Error (i.e. ´Unable to delete the old dialer application´)

These errors should never occur in normal situations. They indicate various failures during the manipulations required to update the dialer application database on the Palm device.
